The time has come for Ryan to move on from our comfortable elementary school and head to the middle school to experience growing autonomy. Before school officially started, we were able to get in the building a couple times for him to practice walking his class route and learn the lay of the land. He also got to practice opening his locker.
I spent a couple weeks before school expanding my tool box, and sharpening by skills by attending a Project Based Learning professional development opportunity, as well as a Kagan Cooperative Learning week-long training.
This is my third year back at it, and my second year teaching 5th grade. It feels different teaching the same curriculum for a second year in a row! Now that I have one year of 5th grade under my belt, I can build and refine. We are introducing flexible seating and 1:1 devices this year, which offers new ways to grow as a learning community.
Ryan was a great help! He organized my classroom library. I totally trust his genre and organizational decisions, as he is an avid reader, and is very comfortable with books. He saved me a lot of time, and I'm so thankful.
Little E is now in 4th grade!
Our routine is to drop Ryan off at the middle school, then we drive over to Brown School together. It is odd to not have Ryan with us. I think we both sort of miss him. Ryan says he misses the elementary school too, though he's fine with how middle school is going so far. We are all adjusting.
