The weekend started out with a fun surprise visit from Eric, one of Burke's closest and oldest friends. Well, it was a surprise to Burke. Eric looped me in, and suggested we play it off like to Burke like I didn't know. Knowing what a stickler I am about planning, this was sure to make Burke squirm a bit, and Eric thought this would be hilarious. I tried to do my best acting. Burke was for sure surprised, and it was great to spend time with Eric.
We were enjoying Crowd Elimination Karaoke at Watermark when we got a text from Ryan that included this picture. He's shockingly completely uninjured and quite calm about the whole thing. This is definitely reassuring and we are so grateful for his safety, but Burke and I were still quite shaken.
He was on his way home from work around dusk. He was going the speed limit (50mph), and swerved to avoid hitting a turkey. He overcorrected, 180-ed, and tipped gently into the ditch of apparently the softest vegetation ever. Ryan immediately recognized how lucky he was.
Sweet kiddo doesn't want to kill an animal, but he was strongly advised by everyone, including the responding state trooper, to hit the animal - break as safely as possible, and hit the animal.
Amazingly, the damage was minimal - if you don't mind driving a dented up car, which Ryan does not. The mechanics remounted the tires and replaced the sideview mirror. That's it. No shattered glass, no airbags, doors open.
In less than a week, he was back on the road.
I'm still shaken up. Don't know exactly how he's processed it, and what is in his brain. I have always been and will continue to be a little nervous every time he drives away. Not much I can do though, except accept scary possibilities and continue to say "safety bubble always" every time he drives away. That is my habit, and Ryan suggested I've put an enchantment on him and his car. Let's hope.
We are so grateful!
We love you, Ryan.
