January Snow

So, far, it was only real winter in for a couple weeks in January. The polar vortex brought snow days off from school, and lots of shoveling.

Also, in January, Evan's 8th grade orchestra performed at DeVos Hall in Grand Rapids in conjunction with the annual music teacher conference. This was a big deal for all involved. It included a fun overnight trip for the kids.

In the conference exhibit hall, Evan won a 5 lb bar of chocolate that he brought home to share with us!

January also brought my dad's 73rd birthday!
To celebrate Level 73, we had a nice brunch out, had afternoon cake/ice cream, and opened gifts. Dad opened a couple birthday gifts, and we all opened belated Christmas gifts, as well. Due to travel, illness, etc. we have had to piecemeal our Ponka Christmas together (and we're still not done).
We were hoping the Lions would win that evening. It would have been the perfect birthday gift. But no, not this year.

Flashback

Wanted to go back and document some notable moments from November and December. Time of a flashback!

Evan chose to play on the 8th grade basketball team this year. He's never played basketball, so this was a major learning experience for him, which he took in stride. Even though it was not a winning season, overall, it was an enjoyable new experience for all of us. That being said, not sure he wants to try out in high school. We'll see. 💙 #10

Ryan is participating in Academic Challenge again this year. He is a co-captain. His team did not do great in this particular tournament, but they've been winning their match ups since.

Ryan played in the pit orchestra for this year's musical - Oklahoma! Burke directed the pit. It's a huge undertaking for all, but an overall positive learning experience.

Flashback finished!
